The water was freezing that night, although the cold only pushed Grayson to swim faster. Perry was right beside him when they first entered the water, but it wasn’t long before Perry managed to pull ahead of him. Being an experienced runner, Grayson was much faster than Perry on land, but when it came to swimming, Perry clearly had the edge.

But it didn’t matter who could swim faster when they both had the same destination, and they would both need to rely on one another to have any hope of rescuing the girls. When they reached the ship at last, they found a ladder at the back. Perry wasted no time scrambling up the ladder, and Grayson was not far behind him.

Although it was unlikely that they would win in an engagement with Kyle and Juancho if it came to that, Perry did have the bow and quiver of arrows, and Grayson had a stone hatchet. Neither was likely to do them much good in a fight, but Grayson certainly felt better having the weapon in hand than he would if he were completely unarmed.

“Alright, what now?” Perry asked just seconds after Grayson’s feet touched the deck of the Mako. “You spent days on this ship, any idea where they might be keeping the girls?”

“I’m not sure, but it’s not a very big ship, so it shouldn’t be hard to find them.”

“Is there a brig?”

“I don’t think so. I spent most of my time up on deck, though.”

“How about a storeroom?”

“Yeah, there is one of those. It’s below deck.”

“We should probably start there then. Lead the way.”

Grayson and Perry crept along the deck, keeping crouched and trying to stick to the shadows. There was no sign of the smugglers, and that worried Grayson. He figured somebody would be keeping a lookout, but maybe the smugglers were simply more complacent than he anticipated.

After locating the stairs and slowly starting to descend, Grayson heard shouting in Spanish from behind them. Spinning around, he spotted Juancho standing at the top of the stairs, armed with a machete and undoubtedly more than ready to use it judging by the murderous glint in his eyes.

Grayson turned to Perry. “Go find the girls. I’ll keep this guy busy.”

With a curt nod, Perry carried on down the steps, apparently abandoning stealth for speed since they had already been discovered.

Grayson turned around to face his opponent, who was slowly stalking his way down the steps. Grayson hefted his hatchet and got ready to defend himself, but he wasn’t feeling overly confident about his chances when it was crude stone axe versus steel machete.

“Your move,” Grayson said.

Juancho laughed as he twirled his machete and then suddenly lunged at Grayson, swinging the blade towards Grayson’s neck.

Grayson ducked to narrowly avoid losing his head and then charged forward, lowering his shoulder as he tackled the smuggler off his feet.

But he quickly came to the realization that he made a terrible mistake. Juancho wasn’t as tall as Grayson, but he was a lot stronger than he looked.
